Open Source: Microsoft Loves it and Oracle is its Biggest Enemy

Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer was extremely frank about his opinions about Open Source, back in 2001 he turned out to say that 'Linux is a cancer' that threatens Microsoft's intellectual property. Although Microsoft's point of view about Linux and the claimed patents infringement did not change, a relevant shift and change of mind happened as stated by Jean Paoli, Microsoft's General Manager of Interoperability Strategy.

White House Releases Open Source Code

WhiteHouse.gov released custom code used to develop their open platform built on Drupal. The majority of the code used in the web site of the White House is already open source, but developers are now releasing new code -distributed as Drupal modules- in order to benefit others.

No More Linux on PS3? Ask for Refund!

Sony has stopped the feature on PS3 that allows users to install a third-party operating system, the change will take effect by the last PS3 Firmware, available since the last Thursday.

 

12 Millions Ubuntu Users

Canonical reported that there are 12 Millions active users for their Linux distribution, Ubuntu. In 2008 Canonical estimated 8 Millions users, this means a grow of 50% in the last two years.

Chris Kenyon, vice president for OEM at Canonical said: "We have no phone home or registration process, so it’s always a guesstimate. But based on the same methodology that we came up with for the 2008 number, our present belief is that it’s somewhere north of 12 million users at the moment".

Facebook Joins Apache Foundation

Facebook joined the Apache Software Foundation as a Gold sponsor, which means that the company has committed to making an annual donation to the foundation of at least $40,000.

Facebook Web site is built on open source technologies including Linux, Apache, PHP, memcached and MySQL. Facebook has also three projects active in the Apache Software Foundation; Thrift, Hive and Cassandra.

 

Microsoft Apologizes for Anti-Drupal Ads

An anti-Drupal advertisement has been pulled from circulation after it has been made famous by Drupal community on Twitter. The ad asked web developers to "forget Drupal" and it was linking to Microsoft's last product Webspark, a Microsoft's application to web designers and developers.

The Internet Society and W3C to Ensure Open Global Internet

The Internet Society (ISOC) and the World Wide Web Consortium (W3C) today announced a donation from ISOC for the purpose of advancing the evolution of W3C as an organization that creates open Web standards. Citing strongly aligned views on the value of an open global Internet and support for the current Internet governance and management model, the Internet Society pledged to support W3C efforts to implement a more agile, inclusive, and flexible organizational structure.
