Nokia and Intel announced they merged their Linux platforms into Meego, a Linux platform which targets everything from netbooks to TVs and media phones.
The new merged system is a an open source, Linux project which brings together the Moblin project, headed up by Intel, and Maemo, by Nokia.
According to the Meego website, the project includes:

  • Performance optimizations and features which enable rich computational and graphically oriented applications and connected services development.
  • No-compromise internet standards support delivering the best web experiences.
  • Easy to use, flexible and powerful UI/app development environment based on Qt.
  • Open source project organization managed by the Linux Foundation.
  • State of the Art Linux stack optimized for the size and capabilities of small footprint platforms and mobile devices, but delivering broad linux software application compatibility.

Renee James, senior VP and general manager at Intel's Software, stated that the first devices based on Meego are expected to be launched during the second half of 2010.
Nokia said that the new operating system will not change their plans with Symbian, which will apparently be used for cheaper and simpler mobile phones.
"We really want to hear from you. Be in on IRC, on our developer mailing list, or through bugzilla. MeeGo is an open project and it will be successful through its developer community. It's my personal goal to make sure that we can all together be successful. And have fun" said Imad Sousou, Director of Intel’s Open Source Technology Center.
The announcement was made in the current Mobile World Congress, the largest annual meeting of mobile technology industry which is held in Barcelona.

Why oh why Nokia? I hope you don't use their cpu's as well!! I don't think arm is going to be happy about this. Your E63 is a wonderful phone and I hope it's not the last with an arm processor. I'm reasonably sure it won't be but Intel is a monster in the market and I'm sure they'll be very persuasive in the "behind closed doors meetings". Things like "oh you'll make oodles from a holus bolus commitment to our processors".

Please don't sell your soul out to the Monster. I'm sure in the world of business and company survival my words will mean didl'y squat but if millions believe what I believe then you might be in a spot of bother. Catch Ya.
