2008: A Year Full of Achievements for JUST MozillaClub

 

Since its creation as an independent chapter of JUST Open Source Group, Jordan University of Science and Technology MozillaClub helped in marketing Firefox in Jordan and promoting Mozilla products in the local community.



OPEN SOURCE DAY 2008 SPONSORED BY MOZILLA

Open Source Day 2008 has been defined as the largest Jordanian open source event of 2008, covered by main newspapers and with more than 2000 visitors from universities, IT companies and public institutions. The event was sponsored by Mozilla.

Mozilla stand was the most visited in the exhibition pavilion. Free CDs and different kinds of swags were distributed.

Three Mozilla-oriented presentations were in the day's schedule: An Introduction to Firefox 3, Firefox Tips and Tricks and Listen to Your Favorite Music with Songbird.

MEETING WITH MOZILLA FOUNDATION BOARD MEMBER JOICHI ITO

A meeting with open source expert and board of Mozilla Foundation, Joi Ito, was held on October 30th.

Ito discussed about open source software development, free culture and knowledge sharing. He also answered many questions about the actual competition between open source browsers Firefox and Chrome as well as the future relations between Google and Mozilla.

Joi Ito is a member of Mozilla Foundation Board of directors since August 2005, he also served on the board of the Open Source Initiative (OSI) from March 2005 until April 2007 and he currently serves as a Board Emeritus for OSI.

FIREFOX DOWNLOAD DAY

MozillaClub participated in Firefox Download Day, which set a new Guinness World Record for the most downloaded computer software in 24 hours.

Club members downloaded Firefox on all the IT labs of the university.



The downloads were made manually and individually on each computer, to be officially registered as single downloads. Mozilla previously asked community members not to build bots or to perform other unethical and dishonest mechanism to simulate multiple downloads.

JUST MozillaClub will try to convince local Internet Cafes to definitely switch to Firefox. Irbid's University Street is considered to be the one with the most Internet cafes in the world, and MozillaClub plans to spread a world-record web browser in such a world-record street.

CAMPAIGNS

Two important campaigns were performed by MozillaClub:

Firefoxed University: This campaign consisted of Firefox installation on more than 700 PCs in the Computer and Information Technology faculty, making it the default web browser in all the 24 laboratories, especially the "open labs" that are available to more than 18000 students in the university.

JUST4Firefox: Is an initiative to invite university students to choose Firefox as alternative to other web browsers. The campaign tries to inform the students how Firefox is definitely better in ease-of-use, speed and security . Firefox customization and openness are also key factors in the campaign's success.

ONLINE MARKETING

The website of MozillaClub explains the mission and objectives of the club, its campaigns and why we consider Firefox definitely better. "20 Ways to Help Us" are listed to involve other students in club's activities and Firefox promotion.

The website had a big success, both in terms of visits statistics and the good reputation it gained. Even Paul Kim, Vice-President of Marketing at Mozilla, posted about it in his blog.

MozillaClub also spread the word about Download Day and sent e-mail messages to remember group's members of this big event. Members were asked to forward the message to friends and Firefox fans in order to achieve a 'viral marketing' and to encourage other people to download Firefox.

A Facebook group named "Firefox in Jordan" was also created together with a SpreadFirefox.com group.

JORDAN'S FIREFOX LAUNCH PARTY

Members of JUST MozillaClub participated in Firefox 3 Launch Party hosted by long-time Firefox veteran Rami Khader. Party's attendees discussed about the importance of promoting Firefox and Thunderbird among Jordanians.
The idea of creating a "Jordanian MozillaClub" was also discussed along with the practical methods to adopt in order to solve many obstacles faced by Jordanian Mozilla community.

Mozilla firefox has been great browser in many aspects. I have been using this browser for my work. It's great with it's plug-ins and add-on functions which we cannot find in other browsers. This browser is extremely doing great with me that's what keep me going on with it for so long.
